SLAM Hardwood Classics Crop Cover Tee - Jerry Stackhouse (SLAM 49)
Jerry Stackhouse was the MVP of the ā93 McDonaldās All American game. Jerry Stackhouse led the University of North Carolina Tar Heels to the ā95 Final Four as a sophomore. Jerry Stackhouse got selected with the third overall pick in the ā95 draft. Jerry Stackhouse was named to the NBAās ā96 All-Rookie First Team. Jerry Stackhouse covered SLAM 49 in March of ā01. But that nearly never happened.Ā
The potential that Stackhouse consistently flexed in high school, college and the early part of his NBA career almost remained unfulfilled.Ā
Though the Sixers assumed they had landed a franchise cornerstone, it turned out that Stackās time in Philly would only last two-plus seasons. He was self-admittedly āwinging it,ā a headstrong young kid who didnāt accept he had lots to learn. He arrived in Detroit with a bad reputation to shake. Everyone thought the Pistons were getting an aggressively confident two-guard that would clash with the Dās in-house superstar Grant Hill. Turns out, the reputation got shook, elbowed and dunked on. Stack averaged a then-career-best 23 points per game in his first season with the Motor City. He backed up Hill and helped Detroit see the postseason. Hill dipped that summer, leaving Stackhouse with a superstar-sized space to fill up. He happily abided.Ā
Stackās second season with Detroit was his best as a pro. He led the League in total points scored and was second in points per game (29.8 ppg). He was named an All-Star and he successfully proved to everyone that he had grown up. The cover image of issue 49 feels like a primal scream that can be heard through the paper: āSTACK WONāT QUIT.ā
And he never did. He righted his ship after that rocky start, sailing on to 18 total seasons as a player and 11 seasons (and counting) as a coach, all set up by the foundation of his time in Detroit.
